Senior Class Transition
Core textbooks: English of the World of Work, (AGS Publishing, 2003) and accompanying workbook.
Curriculum Overview:
Senior students will refine their transition plans. An overview of college application and job interview skills will be offered. Experiences beyond the classroom will be provided such as job shadowing and visits to local colleges.
Transition Goals:
- Develop a resume.
- Create introduction and thank you letters.
- Role-play making appointments over the telephone and other real life situations.
- Participate in a mock interview.
- Demonstrate familiarity with basic college and job documents and procedures, i.e. understanding a class syllabus and filling out a W-4 Form.
- Maintain and present a portfolio of information and resources that can serve as a reference throughout adulthood.
Junior Class Transition
Core textbooks: ,Learning Power-Strategies for Student Success- Learning TEchnologies Corporation, 1995 and accompanying workbook.
Curriculum Overview:
This course is designed to encourage Juniors to begin thinking about life after Stanbridge and to devise a plan of action for successful movement from high school to post-school. Different college and career options will be explored. Self-advocacy, good decision-making skills and independent living will be stressed.
Transition Goals:
- Successfully introduce themselves to others and articulate their individual strengths, weaknesses and values.
- Set realistic goals for the future through actions taken today.
- Demonstrate knowledge of legalities and services pertaining to them as individuals with learning challenges.
- Complete an employment application and other basic forms.
- Practice time management and other effective organizational skills.
Independent Living
Core textbooks: Skills for Independent Living, (Second Edition Globe Pearson, Pearson Learning Group 2002.
Curriculum Overview:
Students will need to master many skills to successfully live on their own. This class will assist students in making connections between the skills taught in class and the real world.
Independent Living Course Goals:
- Students will learn more about themselves and formulate individual goals.
- Students will practice being good communicators and listeners when in group settings.
- Students will discuss health and safety.
- Students will learn how to get a job, keep a job, and make the most of a job.
- Students will be exposed to budgeting, banking and managing their money.
- Students will study ways to find housing and practice traveling to various places.
- Students will learn about being good citizens, obeying laws, and helping others in the local community.
