Hello again and welcome to another edition of the Weekly Bridge. The Ides of March may be upon us, but this past Friday at Stanbridge, students were treated to a slightly sweeter occasion as they enjoyed a buffet of pies in honor of Saturday's "Pi Day," an unofficial holiday celebrated every March 14 (or 3.14, in mathematical parlance). This year, Pi Day took on special significance, as the calendar allowed us to carry Pi Day to its ninth decimal place—hopefully you marked the moment Saturday night at 53 seconds after 9:26 p.m., when it was 3/14/15 9:26:53 (or 3.141592653). With so much other news to report, it would be truly irrational to focus solely on this aspect of the week, so here is the rest of the non-numerical news from campus:
Headlining this week's update is the latest from our Head of School search. This past Thursday and Friday, the first of three finalist for the position was on campus to tour the school and meet with staff, students, trustees, and parents. After each meeting, the various constituencies were invited to provide feedback on the candidate for our Head of School Search Committee to consider. If you were present for one of the candidate's forums and did not receive a feedback form, you can pick up a copy in the main office or request one by emailing Maggie and Susan. Please ensure you provide your feedback in a timely manner, as the next two candidate visits are scheduled for this week and next.
With that said, our second Head of School candidate will be visiting this week, Monday and Tuesday, March 16-17, and the third candidate next Monday and Tuesday, March 23-24. All candidates are following identical schedules of meeting with all key Stanbridge personnel, and there are multiple opportunities for parents/guardians to meet each candidate for a parents-only Q&A forum. At each of these meetings, we will hand out summary bios of the candidate along with a survey eliciting the feedback of those who attend. The schedule of candidate Q&A forums with parents and guardians is:
Candidate #2: Monday, 3/16 - 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, 3/17 - 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Candidate #3: Monday, 3/23 - 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, 3/24 - 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
To assist the search committee with planning and preparation, please fill out the online RSVP form on our Files & Forms page if you plan to attend one or more of the remaining candidate forums. These forums are unique opportunities for you to learn more about our head of school candidates in a conversational setting, ask them questions, and provide the search committee with your feedback. We highly encourage all Stanbridge parents and guardians to attend.
Also on our Files & Forms page, you will find an electronic copy of our Afterschool Clubs brochure, listing the clubs that will be offered for the third and final session of the school year. Please note that the second session of clubs ended this past week and there will be no afterschool clubs this week, March 16-20. The third session of afterschool clubs at Stanbridge will begin the week of March 23 and will run through the end of May. We are excited to be offering another wide-ranging selection of club activities during this session, including some new offerings as well as many returning favorites. Students are welcome to sign-up for new clubs, or re-enroll in their current club. Please note that some new clubs are being offered, and other clubs have changed their club day. Clubs fill on a first-come, first-served basis and enrollment is open through April 2. To sign-up, simply return your enrollment form and payment to the main office. Hard copies of the clubs brochure will be distributed to students on Monday, and extra copies will be available in the main office.
This week, students in our high school division will be heading off-campus again for their third Day of Service this school year. On Tuesday, March 17, students in grades 9-12 will spend the day volunteering at one of three locations: The Second Harvest Food Bank, Inn-Vision Shelter, or Golden Gate Park. Student advisors distributed all necessary permission forms; please ensure they are signed and returned to the main office by Monday. Speaking of service projects, Student Body President Ben Simson and the Stanbridge Student STAR Teams are working together to collect at least 120 bags of candy to donate to the CALL-Primrose pantry in Burlingame. The candy will benefit local children in our community, ensuring they have a happy Easter holiday. Families in all grade divisions can contribute to this service project by dropping-off bags of pre-wrapped candy (no nuts please) in the collection bin in the main office. Collection will run through March 24, and representatives from the STAR Teams and student government will personally deliver the donated items before Spring Break.
On the Annual Fund front, I am happy to report that we are closing-in on our goal of 100% family participation. As you know, if the K-8 grade divisions reach 100%, we receive $5,000 in bonus matching funds; ditto if our 9-12 high school division hits the 100% participation mark. That's $10,000 in extra funds for Stanbridge if every family simply makes a donation. Currently, the K-8 divisions are at 83% and high school is at 86%. Our goal is to reach that magic 100% mark by April 1, and we're getting closer every day. If you have not yet given, know that any amount will help and every donation makes a difference! Donation envelopes are available in the main office, and you can also give via credit or debit card through our secure online platform, just click over to our Donate Now page. This has been a tremendous year so far for the Annual Fund—thank you to everyone who has donated and to the many Annual Fund committee volunteers for their help in making this year's campaign so successful!
Before we close out this week's update, a few final notes:
- Be sure to click over to the SPA Spot page for details on some important upcoming events. This Friday, SPA will be sponsoring another afterschool trip to the movies for high school students (title TBA later this week), and next Friday, March 27, SPA will hold the monthly Bake Sale during student lunch periods (volunteers still needed to provide items for the sale). Also, mark your calendars for the April SPA meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, April 1. Complete details on those events and more over on the SPA Spot page.
- The end of the third academic quarter is coming-up at the end of the month. Progress reports were sent home in the mail to parents/guardians of students who are in danger of failing a class. If you received a progress report, please contact the appropriate teacher to discuss ways in which your student can improve his/her grade before this quarter's grades are finalized. Teacher emails are posted in the Teachers section of the website.
- Finally, video clips from this year's Student Talent Show will be online this week. Once we have finalized the editing, we will post the clips on our YouTube channel, so be sure to check for an announcement later this week!
That's all for now. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and all of that leftover pie!
