Bridge to College with Support for Independent LivingMany Stanbridge Academy students need a little extra support for the intensive academic workload and social pressures associated with traditional college settings. Fortunately, there are several programs in the Bay Area and around the nation that offer students the extra tutoring and independent living guidance they need. Below are some of the programs Stanbridge Academy graduates have found success in.

College Living Experience-Monterey
The College Living Experience of Monterey supports students as they pursue AA, BA, and BS degrees at Chapman University, UC Monterey, and Monterey Peninsula College. Students enrolled in the CLE live together in apartments (rather than on campus, in dorms) where they can receive tutoring and study skills support as well as adult supervision for independent living skills.
| College Internship Program of Berkeley
The College Internship Program of Berkeley assists enrolled students in earning a degree at local schools and universities as well as offering their own curriculum. Some of these classes include Social Thinking, Social Mentoring, Theory of Mind, and Relationship Development. They also offer community service, internship, and career support services. Several Stanbridge graduates have enrolled in CIP programs.

Notre Dame de Namur: Asperger's Program
Note: This is a pilot program; not officially offered as of Fall 2011.
At a recent Autism conference, the Dean of Academics at Notre Dame de Namur University explained that the school is currently piloting an Asperger's program consisting of a cohort of 12 students. This program has not been officially announced, but we promise to check in with ND at the end of this school year to see how the piloting went. | Summer Bridge programs
We recommend that any students who are considering taking the four-year college path enroll in Summer Bridge programs either through the school where you plan to apply or at a school near you. Summer Bridge offers high school Juniors the opportunity to get the hang of college classes--understand academic workload and expectations, learn necessary study and time management skills, and get a general overview of the social dynamics and challenges that 4-year schools might present.
Below is a list of some local and national schools who offer a comprehensive, and in some cases, low-cost, Summer Bridge programs. Remember to apply early! |
