It's "Sort of" Easy Being Green! Stanbridge High School Students Lead the Way

This morning senior Bridges students, Eamon and Dashiell presented their "Going Green Program" to all high school and middle school students. Dashiell and Eamon created this program as part of their Bridges Internship. Going Green is a recycling program where we teach students about recycling and how we can do our part of saving the planet that we live on. During the assembly, they asked students to take responsibility for the waste they produce, put it in the proper bin, and pick up after themselves and others. They also shared an alarming statistic, that America produces 268 million tons of waste and that the average American produces 4.4 pounds of waste each day!!! For many years, we have been making the planet more harmful by throwing waste in the wrong bins. It’s important to put them in the right bins to make our environment cleaner and healthier.

In order to test students' knowledge regarding proper waste disposal, Dashiell and Eamon showed a number of different waste items to the assembly and asked students to identify which bin each item should go into: 

Black (Landfill), Blue (Mixed Recyclables) or Green (Compost). ​

Students were engaged and learned a lot about proper waste disposal. For homework, we challenged students to go home and have a discussion with their families about waste disposal. They were also informed that each city or service provider has their own specific rules about what goes in which bin and that they should print up the specifications for their own city and post it somewhere accessible in the kitchen.
