About Stanbridge Academy

Belong. Flourish. Thrive.

Stanbridge Academy is a K-12 independent school in San Mateo for students with mild-to-moderate learning differences and social communication challenges, including dyslexia, ADHD and autism spectrum profiles. We were founded in 1982 by families and educators who saw a gap between what their children needed and what traditional schools were built to offer.

Our community is intentionally small, about 85 to 95 students, with an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Class sizes stay small enough that every student is known well, not just enrolled. Faculty and staff include licensed counselors, speech-language therapists and occupational therapists who work alongside classroom teachers throughout the school day, not on a separate track.

Academics at Stanbridge are rigorous and individualized. Students also take part in arts, athletics and clubs, and beginning in eighth grade they work with our College Counseling and Transitions program to plan for what comes after Stanbridge, whether that is college, vocational training or supported employment. Stanbridge is accredited by WASC and CAIS and certified by the California Department of Education as a non-public school.
