Experiential Learning
Experiential learning in High School is designed to build independence, confidence and real-world competence alongside classroom content. Trips are structured, curriculum-connected and intentionally challenging in ways that are appropriate and supported.
Past high school experiential trips have included NatureBridge in Yosemite National Park, the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, sea kayaking to study bay ecology, river rafting to explore stream ecology, Habitat for Humanity builds that apply math skills, and urban scavenger hunts that develop mass transit navigation and map-reading skills — practical tools for independent living.
Every other year, Stanbridge juniors and seniors travel to Washington, D.C. in partnership with CloseUp for an immersive trip incorporating history, civics and government. Students visit historic landmarks, meet with government representatives and interact with students from schools across the country.
Social Learning is built into every experiential trip. Students practice self-regulation, collaboration and communication in settings where the context is real and the support of familiar staff is present throughout.
