On My Mind: Tips for Passing the Driving Test

5/20/2019

The "On My Mind" series is authored by Stanbridge 12th grader Alix as part of the High School Bridges/Transitions class in-house marketing internship program. We invite you to check back for coming posts about our soon-to-be-graduates plans.
Recently, I passed my behind-the-wheel driving test on my third attempt. I felt very happy to finally pass the test. Since other students my age are learning how to drive as well, I am going to give some advice for passing a driving test.

Not all examiners are kind and friendly, so be prepared. Therefore, practice is probably the best advice to give. If you don’t pass your first time, remember that it’s not the end of the world. It just means that you will have to retake it. Before you retake the test, get lots of practice in the areas where you messed up the first time.

Here are some more tips for before or the day-of your driving test:
  • Dress business casual. You might think that a there is no preference for what you wear, but it is recommended that you dress business casual, so that the examiners know that you will take it seriously.
  • Make a mandatory behind-the-wheel test appointment, as soon as possible. The DMV is most always very busy. Arrive to your appointment up to twenty minutes early.
  • Required documents to bring include:
    • Birth certificate
    • Two proofs of address from one or both of your parents
      • Note: If you already have a State ID, none of the above is necessary.
    • Your Learner’s Permit
    • Proof that the vehicle you are testing in is insured (or test will be postponed.)
  • Make sure that the test vehicle is well prepared ahead of time. If necessary:
    • Get the vehicle serviced, to be sure it does not malfunction during the test
    • Wash the test vehicle. A clean windshield will make it easier to see and it’s more presentable.
    • Fill up your car with gas.
  • Practice! Practice! Practice!

Editor's Note: CONGRATULATIONS, ALIX! We know you worked really hard for this rite of passage!
A few additional tips re: passing the driving test, from the CA DMV website:

"When you are ready to take the actual test, keep these suggestions in mind:
  • Review the California Driver Handbook. It contains a lot of information and it may take you a few days to get through it.
  • Read the test questions carefully. Don't read anything extra into the question. There will be one correct answer and the other two answer choices will be either obviously wrong or not appropriate for the question asked.
  • Remember, all the test questions are taken from the handbook. If you miss a question, the field office employee can tell you on which page to find the correct answer.
  • Don't be nervous. DMV wants you to pass your test. Good Luck!"
